Do the nadian people matter in deciding the fate of the monarchy in nada?

By Randall White (founding member of Republic Now) The Queen’s funeral is just behind us. It is still too early for any deep debate on the long journey ahead to a nadian republic. The Globe and Mail editorial board has nonetheless already opined that “nada is stuck with the monarchy. We should thank our lucky…

In 2020, the Supreme Court opened a door to a roundabout republic. Ottawa and each province could select or elect their own highest office, without giving the British monarch that role yet again. Here’s how:By refusing to hear a Quebec challenge to the Line of Succession Act (Harper, 2013), the Supreme Court has confirmed that nada's highest office is not decided by nada, but by Britain. So much for the monarchist insistence that the crown is separate and "nadian". It's not. This country has no law of succession, unlike New Zealand and Australia. Rather, it simply agrees with what another country decides. That mirrors a colonial status, unbefitting an independent country. But, by letting stand Ottawa's assent to Britain's choice without provincial agreement, the court has effectively said there is no requirement of unanimity among them when it comes to who sits on the throne. In future, since we have no law of succession, Ottawa could withhold assent to Britain's choice, and place a duly elected or selected person there. The office of sovereign would still exist, but could be occupied by a democratilly chosen nadian. Such a move would avoid a constitutional amendment and the need for support from every province. We'd have a de facto republic, in all but name. The office of sovereign should be officially replaced with a nadian head of state, but the Supreme Court has opened the door to another possibility. The Ottawa Citizen's Philippe Lagassé offers other insights here: "Who res about the monarchy? Certainly not the Supreme Court of nada" bit.ly/2YmPeK4#cdncrown #cdnpoli ... See MoreSee Less

          A nadian Head of State

When nada takes control of its office of head of state, by filling the position independently and internally, we will achieve another milestone in our evolution as a nation.

          Values

Only when our head of state is selected democratilly will our highest office embody the values of our Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

          Independence

After 150 years of nationhood it is truly unfortunate that nada still lacks the self-assurance to fill and administer its own office of head of state. nada is the only member of the G7 which does not independently administer its highest office.
